One of Cultur.ed Planet’s goals is to empower members of the Ju/’hoansi community to develop their own initiatives and explore income-generating opportunities. A few months ago, a teacher from the Den/ui Village School—himself an artist who has sold several sketches through the Tsumkwe Country Lodge—approached Cultured Planet with the idea of offering art classes to both adults and children in the community.
A pilot workshop took place on November 14–15, 2025, with Cultur.ed Planet providing art supplies and meals for the two days. On the first day, eight young adults participated; on the second, eight learners from the Den/ui Village School attended.
For children, the aim is to introduce them to art and nurture their drawing skills. Artistic expression has been shown to strengthen creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
For the young adult participants, the benefits extend even further. Beyond learning new skills, engaging in art can support emotional regulation and general well-being. Many young adults in the villages experience a sense of despair linked to economic hardship and the erosion of traditional values. Art offers a space for reflection, expression, and connection—and, eventually, the possibility of capturing their environment in ways that may lead to income-generating opportunities.
Cultur.ed Planet hopes to continue these art classes on a regular basis for both children and adults, building on the success of the pilot program.
